Resogun
Resogun is a pure arcade shooter that takes the classic side-scrolling principle and bends it around a cylinder. The player flies along the inner wall of a rotating game world, shooting down waves of enemies while trying to save the last surviving humans, who run around on the surface waiting to be carried to safety. It's precisely this rescue of civilians that turns the game into something more than mere shooting: whenever key enemies appear, the player must interrupt the attack, fly to the other side of the cylinder, and pick up the humans before the enemy destroys them. The tension between greed for score and the duty to protect civilians drives the whole design.
The arsenal is spare but well balanced: an upgradeable main weapon, an overcharged shot, a temporary shield, and a bomb that pays off to save for the right moment. The game runs at a high tempo and rewards keeping the multiplier alive, so the best results belong to players who can keep firing continuously while moving around the entire circumference of the level. The Vita version was released later than the original PlayStation 4 edition and is a separately adapted port that sacrificed some effects but kept what matters: smooth performance, legibility, and a huge amount of voxel particles that break apart into individual cubes during explosions.
Sound and music matter just as much as the visuals. The electronic backing intensifies as the pressure on screen grows, and the terse synthetic voice announcing the imminent loss of the last human ranks among the most memorable audio motifs of its generation. The title was received as an example of what a modern arcade game should look like: short, demanding, and built around leaderboards. Besides the main arcade progression, it also offers rule-altered variants and the option to cooperate in pairs, so there are more reasons to come back than the chase for a better ranking alone. Today Resogun is ideal handheld entertainment: a single round lasts a few minutes, but the pursuit of a better score keeps you at the console considerably longer than originally planned.
