A mecha shooter from Square, an exception among their RPGs; a pilot mentally linked to his machine.

Omega Boost is an action mecha shooter from Polygon Magic, published in 1999 by Square for PlayStation as one of its more unusual experiments outside the RPG genre on which the publisher had built most of its reputation at the time. The player takes on the role of the pilot of the combat robot Omega Boost, whose consciousness is linked to the machine itself, and fights against a hostile artificial intelligence to defend Earth from an invasion of machines from the future, with the game taking place across space corridors, orbital stations, and ground battlefields full of enemy machines and giant bosses.

The game is built on fast, arcade-style action, alternating between on-rails sequences and freer movement in open space, where the player dodges volleys of shots, performs boosted evasive maneuvers, and switches between long- and short-range weapons. Both the pace of the game and its visual style clearly reference anime mecha works, reflected in the design of the robots, enemies, and the sprawling bosses that close out each level. The short but intense campaign is designed to be replayed for higher scores and difficulty, much like classic arcade shooters, where the focus is above all on precise movement, quick reactions, and memorizing individual bosses' attack patterns.

With its visual design, fluid action, and distinctive electronic soundtrack, the game ranked among the technically most ambitious titles of its genre on PlayStation. Although it did not achieve the same commercial success as other Square titles, critics praised its precise controls, adrenaline-fueled pace, and audiovisual presentation. Its short playtime is offset by high replay value for score hunters and players who love mastering every level to perfection. Today Omega Boost is a sought-after cult item for collectors and mecha action fans, who see it as one of the best, yet least appreciated, shooter experiences on the PlayStation console.

Why play it: For collectors and mecha action fans looking for a short but adrenaline-fueled, technically ambitious experience with high replay value for score hunters.
