Pavlov VR
Pavlov VR is a multiplayer tactical shooter that brings the tradition of online FPS games built around team firefights into virtual reality – players compete in modes inspired by classics like Counter-Strike, Search & Destroy, or battle royale, with the difference being that all weapon handling is done with your own hands. Loading a magazine, flipping off the safety, aiming through real sights, and running between cover – all of this is handled physically, which gives the game a tangibility that flat shooters cannot offer, and the player must learn the same skills as with a real weapon, just in a safe virtual environment.
The game began as a fairly modest project in Unreal Engine, but thanks to a long stay in Early Access on Steam it gradually grew to include dozens of weapons, maps, and game modes, including a cooperative zombie survival mode. Support for community mods and custom maps also plays a big role, thanks to which Pavlov built a loyal player base far beyond the typical VR audience. The sound design of combat, the echo of gunshots in enclosed spaces, and the necessity of communicating with the team create tension typical of competitive tactical shooters.
Within the PC VR scene, Pavlov has long been considered one of the most convincing proofs that physical interaction with a weapon can work not only in slow-paced adventures but also in fast, competitive multiplayer. The transition from Early Access to full release was accompanied by gradual improvements to the network code and optimization for weaker VR headsets, thanks to which the game retained playability even on less powerful computers. Even years later it remains one of the most-played VR shooters on PC and a reference title for anyone who wants to experience team combat with a genuine sense of a weapon in hand, and a number of later multiplayer VR titles openly cite its formula of physical weapon handling as their model.
Why play it: For fans of competitive multiplayer with a genuine sense of a weapon in hand, it is one of the most-played and most-referenced VR titles on PC, functional even on weaker rigs.
