The Walking Dead: A New Frontier

The Walking Dead: A New Frontier introduced the third season of Telltale's adaptation of the comic book source and brought a new main character, Javier, whose fate gradually intertwines with that of the now grown-up Clementine, whom players had accompanied since the first season. This combination of a new and a familiar character was meant to let players enter the series even without knowledge of the previous installments, while at the same time rewarding loyal fans with a continuation of their decisions.

The game mechanics stayed true to the series' established style - conversations with timed responses, moral dilemmas without a clearly right choice and action sequences handled through quick-time events. In this season Telltale also experimented with the pacing of the storytelling and with longer excursions into the characters' past, which deepened characterization but slowed the main storyline for some players. Visually, the game continued in the proven comic-book style with distinctive shading that hid the technical limits of the engine well.

The reception was more mixed than for previous seasons; critics praised the emotional scenes but criticized the uneven pacing and the less distinctive supporting characters. The season also came out at a time when Telltale Games was facing growing financial problems that led to the studio's closure a few years later, so with hindsight it is also seen as one of the last larger projects of the company before its fall, which gives it a particular value for fans following the studio's history.
