A harsh Zone around Chernobyl full of anomalies, mutants, and rival factions.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl takes the player into a fictional Zone around the Chernobyl power plant, which after a second disaster has been overrun by anomalies, mutants, and rival groups of armed outcasts. The player begins as a man with no memory and a single entry in his PDA, gradually pushing deeper into the exclusion area, taking on jobs, trading, and deciding which factions to help. The structure is semi-open world: individual large areas are connected by passages and can be explored freely, whether hunting artifacts or simply trying to survive the night.

Combat is merciless. Weapons have wide spread until the player acquires a better one, enemies aim well, and a few hits mean the end, so it pays to use cover, a scope, and a cautious approach. Survival is complicated by hunger, radiation, a damaged suit, and limited carry weight, forcing every kilogram of ammunition to be weighed carefully. Anomalies, invisible traps that burn or crush anything that enters them, are located by throwing bolts, and they keep the journey through the landscape in constant tension.

Technically the game ran on its own X-Ray engine, whose lighting, dynamic weather, and sweeping views of abandoned settlements were among the best 2007 had to offer, though at the cost of occasional bugs. Sound is the atmosphere's main weapon: the crackle of a Geiger counter, distant barking dogs, a guitar by a stalker campfire, and silence broken only by the wind. Reviews were positive, with reservations about the technical state at launch. Today the game is kept alive by its exceptionally strong atmosphere and huge modding scene, thanks to which S.T.A.L.K.E.R. can be played in dozens of forms and still ranks among the most distinctive shooters on PC. Mods fix bugs, expand the world, add weather and new weapons, and often change the whole game beyond recognition. Anyone looking for a harsh, lonely trek without markers and without hand-holding will find here an experience that big commercial series don't offer.
