Overwatch 2
Overwatch 2 is the sequel to the hero team shooter Overwatch, bringing a shift from the 6v6 format to a faster 5v5 and substantially reworking a number of heroes and game mechanics. Players choose from an extensive roster of characters divided into tank, damage, and support roles, each with markedly different abilities and playstyle, and together they complete objectives like defending a point, escorting a payload, or fighting over a control zone. The key to success is coordination across the whole team and correct timing of ultimate abilities, which can turn the tide of a fight.
The game runs on an improved version of the first title's engine and offers striking visuals with clearly readable color-coding for heroes and effects, which is crucial for fast team firefights. Blizzard turned the game into a free-to-play model with regular seasons, new heroes, maps, and cosmetic items that replaced the earlier loot box system. The sound and music underscore the distinct personalities of individual heroes, many of whom have their own signature lines and themes.
Overwatch's competitive scene rests mainly on the Overwatch League and follow-up formats, where the game is made readable for spectators through color-coded teams, a display of available ultimate abilities, and commentators explaining hero picks and tactics. The move to Overwatch 2 was met with mixed reactions from part of the community due to monetization changes and the gradual merging of PvE ambitions with the classic competitive mode, but the game nonetheless retained its reputation as one of the most distinctive hero shooters of the genre it helped launch back in 2016.
A prominent element of Overwatch 2 remains the story background of individual heroes, developed through animated short films, comics, and accompanying materials that turn the characters into recognizable personalities far beyond the game itself. This crossover into pop culture helped set Overwatch apart from competing shooters from the start and brought it a loyal fan base that follows the development of the game's world even outside the matches. Blizzard tries to maintain this identity in the second title as well through regular seasonal story events.
Why play: For players who want more than just matches, it offers heroes with their own identity developed through animated films and comics, plus regular seasonal story events that set it apart from competing shooters.
