Metro: Last Light Redux
Metro: Last Light Redux is a reworked version of the 2013 action game Metro: Last Light, loosely based on Dmitry Glukhovsky's novels and set a year after the events of Metro 2033, in the contaminated tunnels and ruins of a Moscow destroyed by nuclear strike. The 2014 Redux edition moved the game onto the improved engine foundation that 4A Games polished alongside the Metro 2033 Redux remaster, unified both playstyles - quiet infiltration and more open firefights - into a single selectable style, reworked the lighting and character models, and added all previously released additional content to the package, including a new, significantly harder Ranger mode.
The player once again takes on the role of Artyom, journeying through the contaminated surface and claustrophobic tunnels amid factions of survivors, fanatics, bandits, and the supernatural phenomena plaguing the metro. The game relies on a tense atmosphere, managing limited ammunition that also serves as currency with traders, maintaining a gas mask with filters of limited lifespan, and choosing between sneaking through a game of shadow and light or direct confrontation. Redux also made it possible to switch between Survival and Spartan modes at any point during play, letting everyone fine-tune the level of tension and difficulty without having to start the game over.
The PC version launched in August 2014 alongside the console editions and remains, for many, the most flexible option - resolution, frame rate, and graphics settings aren't tied to a fixed target as they are on consoles, so on a more powerful PC the game can run sharper and smoother than on PS4 or Xbox One, while on older hardware the detail could easily be turned down. Content-wise, the PC version is identical to its console counterparts, including all additional content and the Ranger mode. It was also a good-value choice for players who wanted to get both reworked Metro games with their earlier expansions for the price of one game, without needing to separately buy the older, technically outdated 2010 and 2013 originals.
Why play: For the most flexible version of the remastered Metro - a more powerful PC can handle higher resolution and smoother performance than PS4 and Xbox One - and the good-value option of getting both reworked games with their earlier expansions for the price of one.
