Medal of Honor
The 2010 Medal of Honor marked a fundamental reboot of the series, moving it from the historical context of World War II into the present day and having the player fight alongside American special forces in the mountains of Afghanistan. The campaign alternates between the perspectives of several soldiers, from ground operators of a Tier 1 unit to pilots of aircraft providing air support to ground forces, thereby trying to show the contemporary conflict from several angles at once instead of a single heroic narrative thread. The game's tone is deliberately grittier, harsher, and less heroic than in earlier entries, with an emphasis on tension, uncertainty, and the psychological toll of modern asymmetric warfare.
In terms of gameplay, it's a fairly traditional corridor shooter emphasizing cover, tactical advancement of small squads of soldiers, and intense mid-range firefights, complemented by the harsh mountainous terrain of Afghanistan as a distinctive and authentic backdrop. The game ran on a modified version of the Unreal Engine 3 and looked technically solid, though not groundbreaking, with functional lighting, decently animated characters, and believably rendered villages. The audio was one of its stronger points, with realistically depicted gunfire, authentic radio communication, and darker, less bombastic music than in the series' historical entries.
The reboot met with a more mixed critical reception; the ambition to show a contemporary conflict more rawly and believably was praised, but the campaign's brevity and a certain similarity to the competing Call of Duty series, against which the game competed directly on the market during the same period, were criticized. Despite the mixed reception, this reboot remains an interesting historical stop in the series, showing how Medal of Honor tried to find its identity again at a time when the modern military shooter genre was clearly dominated by other brands.
Why play it: For those interested in the series' history who will appreciate the attempt at a rawer, more believable take on the conflict of the time, despite the shorter campaign and the shadow of stronger competition from Call of Duty.
