Fable Fortune
Fable Fortune moves the world of Albion into the collectible card game genre, built around duels between two players who assemble decks from spells, weapons, and creatures familiar from earlier entries in the series. The cards are often accompanied by small animations and lines from characters like Reaver or Theresa, so even in card form the game keeps Fable's characteristic teasing humor, and players still feel they're in the same world as the action games. Players gradually unlock new cards and decks, so building up a collection keeps the same pace of discovery that fans of collectible card games are used to from other titles in the genre.
The game comes from Flaming Fowl Studios, a team founded by former Lionhead Studios developers after Microsoft closed the studio in 2016, leaving the fate of the Fable brand uncertain for a while. Fable Fortune was made possible in part thanks to fan support, helping the universe continue on even without its original creator and without backing from a major publisher. The game went through a PC early access period, during which the card system and card balance were gradually fine-tuned based on player feedback, before reaching full release in 2018 simultaneously on PC and Xbox One, with cross-play support between the two platforms and shared leaderboards. For the Flaming Fowl Studios team, it was also proof that a closed studio's legacy could be carried forward on a much smaller budget, provided the chosen genre didn't require a sprawling open world or costly animation.
Why play it: Fable Fortune is an interesting choice for series fans who want to see the world of Albion in an unexpected, more strategic guise, and for card game players looking for a title with a strong sense of humor and familiar faces instead of generic fantasy. It's no replacement for the classic Fable RPGs, but it's an honest card game variant with its heart in the right place and a sincere origin in the fan community.
