Grand strategy about a dynasty, not a state - when a ruler dies, you keep playing as their heir.

Crusader Kings III is a grand strategy game in which you don't play as a state, but as a person. You pick a specific medieval ruler, from an Irish count to a Byzantine emperor, and play as them until death; then you take over their heir and continue on, with the main concern usually being keeping power within your family. This flips the genre's usual logic on its head. Conquered land is worthless if inheritance law splits it among three sons, and your most dangerous enemy is often your own brother.

Every character has traits, skills, secrets, and a stress level that rises when they act against their nature. Relationships are built from concrete memories of what you did to whom, so when a vassal refuses to send troops, it's usually obvious why. Outside the battlefield, the game is played through intrigue: you can plot against a rival, gain allies through marriage, raise a foreign heir at your own court, or simply focus on longevity. Alongside this runs a religious layer, where you can modify or even found your own faith, and a system of lifestyle paths that gradually turns a ruler into a scholar, a warrior, or a scheming courtier.

Compared to the previous entry, the game has worked hard on clarity: the interface explains where every number comes from, character portraits are fully three-dimensional and change with age and personality, and there's an extensive guide for newcomers. Reception was excellent, and the title is often cited as the most accessible gateway into the world of grand strategy. It was followed by expansions focused on Norse cultures, court life, royal residences, or religious power. Today, Crusader Kings III is played mainly for its stories: far more than the optimal move, you'll remember the moment your closest friend betrayed you at your own wedding. The military side is deliberately simpler by comparison, and the game doesn't try to be a precise historical simulation, but rather a machine for dynastic drama that you can't stop playing.
