Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare from 2019 is a reboot of the popular Modern Warfare sub-series, bringing a darker, grittier take on modern warfare set in a fictional Middle East and Europe. The campaign emphasizes realism and morally ambiguous situations, while multiplayer offers an extensive selection of maps, the elaborate Gunsmith weapon customization system, and a new Spec Ops cooperative mode. The game was developed by Infinity Ward and is the very first entry in the series with full crossplay across all platforms from day one.
The PC version launched on October 25, 2019, alongside the editions for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One; for the first time in the series, however, the game required Blizzard's Battle.net to launch instead of its own Call of Duty launcher. Compared to consoles, the PC edition offers a higher technical ceiling – support for higher resolution and frame rate, a wider range of graphics settings, and ray tracing technology for more realistic shadows on supported graphics cards. The game offers no official map editor or custom-content creation tools on any platform, so the PC version brings no extra advantage in this regard.
From day one, the PC version supported full crossplay with console players on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, including shared progression and unlocked content. In terms of content, the PC release is entirely identical to the console versions; the differences concern exclusively technical performance and graphics-setting options.
The game also reintroduced beloved characters such as Captain Price and Soap MacTavish, albeit in reworked roles matching the new, more realistic take on the story, and for the first time in the series offered extensive night-vision gameplay with sound and visual effects matching real-world technology. The Gunfight 2v2 multiplayer mode also became one of the series' most popular fast-paced formats and benefited on PC from low control latency thanks to the high frame rate.
Why play it: For the return of iconic characters like Captain Price in reworked, grittier roles, the elaborate night vision, and the brisk Gunfight 2v2 mode, which on PC benefits from a high frame rate and low control latency.
