The Cold War, a CIA agent, and a story that plays with the player's memory and identity.

Call of Duty: Black Ops took the seventh entry in the series into the dark days of the Cold War, where the player, in the role of CIA agent Alex Mason, gets caught up in a story full of interrogations, conspiracies, and operations across Cuba, Vietnam, and the Soviet Union. After Modern Warfare 2, Treyarch took the reins and delivered a narrative that plays with the main character's memory and identity, a fairly bold storytelling move for a mainstream action series at the time. The campaign alternates fast-paced action sequences with quieter interrogation moments and keeps the typically Hollywood-style pacing full of twists that made the series famous starting with Modern Warfare.

Gameplay-wise, the game builds on the proven foundation of FPS action with regenerating health, scripted events, and carefully directed battles, while adding varied sequences such as a motorcycle chase, jungle combat, or defending a base against waves of enemies. Multiplayer introduced the Create-a-Class system with a custom selection of perk combinations and emblem options, as well as the Zombies mode, which grew from a mere bonus extra into one of the main pillars of the entire brand and still has loyal fans returning for further maps today. On PC the game ran smoothly and technically built on previous entries running on a similar engine, though not every version launched without issues, requiring several patches over time.

The atmosphere is reinforced by tense music and authentic period props, weapons, and uniforms, which evoke the Cold War era better than most contemporaries set in more modern conflicts. Critically and commercially, Black Ops was highly successful and cemented Call of Duty's position as the dominant action series of its decade, attracting millions of players every year. Today the game stands as a solid landmark in the brand's history, thanks above all to its Zombies mode and its bold narrative structure, which returns in various forms in later entries of the series and has become one of its recognizable trademarks.

Why play it: For fans of the Cold War and a bold approach to storytelling, who will also appreciate the legendary Zombies mode, which became one of the recognizable trademarks of the entire series.
