A descent into underwater Rapture, where audio diaries tell the story of a utopia's ruin.

BioShock begins with a plane crash in the middle of the Atlantic and a descent into Rapture, an underwater city built as a refuge for the most capable individuals who refused to submit to any government or morality. By the time the player arrives, the utopia is a ruin inhabited by mutated wrecks of people, and all that remains of the original vision are advertising signs and residents' voice recordings. It's these audio diaries that carry most of the story, letting the player piece the city's history together through exploration.

Combat combines classic weapons with Plasmids, genetic abilities that let you hurl lightning, set enemies on fire, or throw them through the air. The environment can be drawn into the fight: water conducts electricity, spilled oil burns, and automated turrets can be hacked to your side. Alongside regular enemies, the game is defined by Big Daddies, hulking guardians of little girls whose defeat is always the player's own choice and opens up a moral decision that affects the ending. An economy of ammo, health kits, and upgrades forces careful management.

Technically the game was built on the Unreal engine and excelled especially in its art direction: art deco interiors, leaking water, flickering neon, and diving suits pressed against glass form one of the most memorable worlds in gaming history. The music alternates between period swing recordings and unsettling string motifs, and the sound of water is present almost constantly. Critics received the game exceptionally well, and discussions about its plot twist and about how freely the player actually acts were among the most cited of its time. Today BioShock requires a bit of patience with its older combat, but as an atmospheric journey through a strange world it remains extraordinary. Rapture has become one of the few gaming locations remembered as well as any film setting, and the game's influence is visible wherever creators let the environment tell the story instead of dialogue. Anyone wanting to experience the classic that changed what a shooter could narrate should start right here.
