You play as a Big Daddy in Rapture; clunkier but more powerful combat, and a new rival - the Big Sister.

BioShock 2 returns players to the underwater city of Rapture, this time in the role of one of the iconic Big Daddies named Delta, searching for his lost Little Sister. Compared to the first game, it offers clunkier but more powerful combat with a drill as the primary weapon, the ability to wield a weapon and a plasmid simultaneously in each hand, and the mechanic of adopting or harvesting Little Sisters, which affects the ending similarly to the previous game. The new adversaries are Big Sisters, fast and dangerous beings protecting the orphaned girls, and fights against them are among the most tense moments in the game; the story also, for the first time, extends beyond Rapture itself into the adjacent district of Pauper's Drop and other parts of the city.

The game runs on an improved version of the first game's engine and visually continues the dilapidated yet still strikingly stylish look of Rapture with its water-drenched art deco architecture. A multiplayer mode set before the city's fall was added, but it left little impression on critics or players. As in the first game, the atmosphere is enhanced by period music from the 1940s and 1950s playing from gramophones and radios, combined with the oppressive industrial sound of the environment.

Critically, BioShock 2 was received positively, though without the same enthusiasm as the first game, which it struggled to match in terms of contribution to the genre. Especially praised was the Minerva's Den add-on, a short but emotionally powerful standalone story that many consider one of the best pieces of content in the entire series. Today the game stands as a solid sequel that perhaps didn't dare take as many risks as the original, but offers a faithful expansion of the world that defined the entire immersive sim shooter genre, and the theme of personal responsibility and manipulation, explored through Delta and his relationship with his Little Sister, gives the story an emotional dimension the first game lacked.

Why play it: For fans of Rapture craving a faithful expansion of the immersive sim shooter world, especially for the Minerva's Den add-on, one of the best pieces of content in the entire series.
