Indianapolis 500: The Simulation
Indianapolis 500: The Simulation is a game from which you can trace the history of serious racing simulators on computers. Instead of arcade-style driving, it offered a single track, a single type of car, and an utterly uncompromising approach to physics. The player gets behind the wheel of an Indy car on the Indianapolis oval, with the choice of practice, qualifying, and a full race that, at full length, means two hundred laps and several hours of focused driving.
The key innovation was car setup. Adjusting wing downforce, spring stiffness, gear ratios, and tire type feeds directly into how the car behaves on track, and the player quickly learns that a fast lap isn't made by courage alone. On top of that comes pit-stop strategy, tire wear, and damage that changes the handling after contact with the wall. A strong point is also the replay system with the ability to switch between cameras and individual cars, which felt like a television broadcast at the time. The graphics are simple but smooth, and the field of rivals behaves variably enough that the race never feels like driving in an empty space.
At the time, the game showed there was an audience willing to spend hours tuning a chassis, and it launched the path of a studio that would go on to define computer racing simulations for years to come. The influence of Indianapolis 500 can be seen in every later game that offers telemetry, car setup, and full race distance. Today the content on offer is narrow — one track and one category of car won't hold your attention for long — but anyone who sits down at the wheel and runs a few qualifying laps will understand why this game is spoken of as a landmark title. The way the game communicates information helps too. The difference between a good and a bad setup shows up immediately in the lap times, the car's behavior in a corner is predictable, and the player learns without the game ever forcing anything on them. That very honesty is why Indianapolis 500 is still cited today as the first true racing simulator for home computers.
