System Shock 2

FPS / RPG 1999 Irrational Games ⏱ Long · ~10–30 h ⭐ Must-play🔞 18+

A shooter with RPG elements aboard a murderous spaceship; the only clues are the recordings of the dead.

System Shock 2 opens with waking up on a starship where something has gone horribly wrong. The crew is dead or transformed, infected people wander the corridors apologizing for what they're doing, and the only clues are audio logs left behind by those who didn't survive. The game blends a first-person shooter with role-playing elements: the player picks a military background, distributes cybernetic modules across skills, hacks locks and security systems, repairs equipment, or develops psionic powers. Ammunition is scarce and weapons wear down and jam, so even an ordinary fight is a decision about whether to engage at all or simply run past.

That very scarcity is what makes the ship such a terrifying place. Sound is the game's main tool, since footsteps behind a bulkhead and distant moaning reach you before you ever see the enemy, and radio voices guide you to your next objective without you ever being quite sure who to trust. The mid-game story twist is one of the best-executed in the genre, and the AI character who inserts itself into events became an icon of game writing. Technically the title was built on an engine with elaborate object and inventory simulation, ran on ordinary computers of the decade's end, and even offered cooperative play, albeit with period limitations.

Sales fell far short of the game's quality, and System Shock 2 was long known more as a legend passed between players than as a hit. Its influence, however, is hard to overlook: the combination of environmental simulation, role-playing progression, and storytelling through found recordings became the foundation of an entire stream of games, one that later sci-fi horror action titles and immersive sims still trace back to. Today it takes a bit of patience because of its tight resource economy and spartan interface, but the atmosphere still works, and modern releases and community mods make it easier to get started. For fans of tense science fiction it remains a mandatory stop.
