Romance of the Three Kingdoms VII

tahová strategie Koei Romance of the Three Kingdoms ⏱ Long · ~10–30 h

A turn-based strategy game about unifying a fractured Chinese empire from the Three Kingdoms era.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms VII is a major change from the previous Koei games. For the first time it lets you play as a single character, a general without a territory of his own who must first build a career, win the ruler's trust and gradually work his way up to power, instead of managing a whole province from the start as in earlier numbered instalments.

This approach gave the game a much more personal dimension. The character can serve different lords, devote himself to trade, army training or court intrigue, and only over time become powerful enough to aim for a territory of his own and, ideally, the unification of China under his own banner. The player can also abandon their character at any time and take on another, so a single playthrough can follow the development of the whole conflict from several points of view. The classic mode of province management and tactical battles on the map has been kept for players who prefer a more traditional approach, so the seventh instalment essentially offers two different play styles side by side, and the player can choose at any moment which suits them better. The graphics and user interface reflect the move to fuller use of the Windows 9x environment, with clearer maps, character portraits and more accessible menus than older DOS-era instalments.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms VII is often cited by fans as one of the most popular instalments precisely because of the freedom offered by the single-character mode, and many players still consider it the gateway to understanding why the series has enjoyed such a long life among lovers of historical strategy. The variability of individual games is also praised: the player never knows in advance what opportunities will arise or whom their character will meet along the way. Its influence is visible in later instalments, which developed the general's career system further and extended it with more options for personal character growth.
