Silent Hunter II

simulace ponorky 2001 Ubisoft Silent Hunter ⏱ Long · ~10–30 h

A slow, thorough submarine simulation - periscope, torpedo calculations, and the tense silence of the deep.

Silent Hunter II is a sequel submarine simulation in which the player takes on the role of a commander of a German U-boat in the Atlantic during World War II. Compared to more straightforward action games on a similar theme, it bets on a thorough and slow approach: tracking convoys through the periscope, calculating torpedo hits based on the target's speed, course, and distance, diving to a safe depth to evade a patrol aircraft or destroyer, and returning to port to restock fuel, torpedoes, and crew. The campaign guides the player through individual years of the war, and the challenge changes over time as well - more modern and faster convoys appear, along with radar on enemy ships and more dangerous anti-submarine measures.

The game targeted mainly fans of serious military simulators and offered both simplified controls for newcomers and a detailed simulation mode with full manual operation of the periscope, navigation, and torpedo data computer. The graphics and sound were among the best in the genre at the time - finely detailed ship models, realistic water behavior, and the tension of patrolling by submarine in quiet, dark waters, where a single mistake means sinking and the death of the entire crew. It's precisely this combination of strategy, patience, and risk that still makes it a favorite title among fans of historical simulators today.

Both the controls and the game's pace take some getting used to - the simulation requires watching many gauges at once, planning routes based on convoy maps, and patiently waiting for the right moment to attack. This is definitely not a game for quick relaxation between other titles. The reward, however, is a depth that action titles on a similar theme don't offer, and a sense of genuine responsibility for the crew's fate on every dive beneath the surface, where one wrong decision can mean the end of the commander's entire career.

Thanks to this installment, the Silent Hunter series cemented its reputation as the most technically sophisticated submarine simulation of its time and laid the foundation for even more extensive sequels that followed in the years to come.

Why play it: An ideal choice for players who love well-thought-out military simulations and don't mind spending time studying tactics and control panels - instead of quick action, it offers tense, slow-burning survival in the role of a submarine commander.
