Grand Prix 3

Závodní simulátor 2000 MicroProse ⏱ Long · ~10–30 h ⭐ Must-play

The peak of Geoff Crammond's Formula 1 simulators; speed here is the reward for understanding.

Grand Prix 3 is the pinnacle of the series that Geoff Crammond made for MicroProse, and at the time of release it was the most respected Formula 1 simulator on computers. Its foundation is a complete season with licensed circuits, qualifying, practice sessions, and a race-weekend structure that can be shortened to taste or played out down to the last detail. The game insists throughout that speed is the product of work, not reflexes: without understanding braking points, correct gear selection, and smooth throttle work, nobody gets very far.

At the heart of it is detailed car setup. Downforce, gear ratios, spring stiffness, toe angle, and brake balance all have a noticeable effect on cornering and straight-line behavior, and the game pushes you to find a compromise between qualifying pace and race-day durability. The major addition over its predecessor was weather — rain changes grip, wet lines form on the track, and driving through standing water demands a completely different rhythm. The graphics already used 3D acceleration, but the biggest impression comes from the sense of speed and the behavior of opponents, who make mistakes and fight among themselves. The engine sound changes with the revs and, in the cockpit, helps you judge when to shift.

At the time the game was received as the benchmark of its genre, though some players noted that visually it lagged slightly behind the competition and that it was more a refinement of its predecessor than a revolution. Still, an unusually active community grew up around the title, spending years creating mods for seasons, cars, and circuits, extending the game's life far beyond the usual shelf life of a racing title. Its influence on the genre is unmistakable: many later simulators adopted its approach to car setup and race weekends. Today Grand Prix 3 is an uncompromising but fair game that rewards patience — and it can still teach what it's like to drive a Formula 1 car. Anyone willing to put in the work on setup and string together a few clean laps in a row experiences a satisfaction that more modern, forgiving racing games rarely offer.
