A card battle featuring characters from both SNK and Capcom; two versions made for trading content via cable.

SNK vs. Capcom: Card Fighters Clash took the then-fashionable idea of card battles and combined it with characters from the two biggest fighting-game makers, creating one of the most beloved titles in the entire Neo Geo Pocket Color library. The game was released in two versions, each built around one of the two houses' cards, and players were meant to trade content over the link cable. The core combat is simple yet tactical: characters with attack and defense values are placed on the table, supported by action cards, and the goal is to bring the opponent's points down to zero. Managing a limited number of actions per turn is essential, since strong cards can't be played without preparation.

A whole story-driven game is built around the battles. The main character walks around town, talks to other players, accepts challenges, buys card packs, and advances through tournaments, so collecting and tuning a deck has a clear purpose and rhythm. The collection numbers in the hundreds of cards illustrated with well-known fighters from Ryu and Chun-Li to Terry and Iori, and the joy of discovering new names is exactly what keeps the game moving forward. The visuals are clean, with cutely drawn character portraits, and the music keeps a cheerful, pop-inflected tone that matches the whole story's lighthearted mood.

The game was highly praised at the time and still shows up near the top of lists of the best card games on handheld consoles. Its simple yet deep system became the benchmark against which later handheld card games were measured, and the brand even got a sequel on a different platform. Today it's probably the best choice for a player who wants to spend dozens of hours with the Neo Geo Pocket Color, not just short sessions. Anyone who enjoys deck-building will find a surprisingly modern-feeling classic here. And because the two versions contain different cards, the game still makes sense played as a pair today, where trading and complementing each other's collections still has plenty to offer.
