The SNK vs. Capcom series began in the late 1990s as a crossover between two rival fighting-game universes, focusing almost entirely on the then-popular Neo Geo Pocket Color handheld. It started with SNK vs. Capcom: Match of the Millennium (1999), a classic 2D brawler in which players built a team of three characters drawn from both companies' rosters - from Terry Bogard and Mai Shiranui to Ryu and Morrigan - and fought using a system that weighed each fighter's strength against a shared team budget, so a stronger character could be balanced out by two weaker ones. Despite the handheld's limited hardware, the game surprised players with smooth animation and careful presentation, earning it a reputation as one of the most technically ambitious titles on the Neo Geo Pocket Color.

Alongside it came the spin-off SNK vs. Capcom: Card Fighters' Clash (1999), a strategic card game using the same characters and an elaborate system for collecting and building decks, which earned cult status on the Neo Geo Pocket Color thanks to a depth unusual for a handheld title. Its 2001 sequel, Card Fighters 2, refined the formula with more cards, characters, and game modes, and together the two titles defined the series' second, card-based branch, which felt like an unexpectedly strategic detour for fighting-game fans.

Although the series did not continue on the Neo Geo Pocket Color after 2001, it laid the groundwork for later, far better-known crossovers between the two companies - the arcade title SNK vs. Capcom: SVC Chaos and the Capcom vs. SNK console series on Dreamcast and other platforms, where the idea of a shared SNK and Capcom roster lived on and helped fuel the wave of "vs." fighting games in the early 2000s. For fans of both brands, this handheld era is still remembered as a period when the crossover worked primarily as an honest, well-crafted game rather than just a marketing gimmick.
