Captain America and the Avengers
Captain America and the Avengers is based on an arcade machine by Data East and arrived on the NES in the early nineties as a comic-book action beat-'em-up with a strong Marvel license. Playing as Captain America, or one of the other Avengers, the player fights their way through streets and interiors full of henchmen working for the villain Red Skull, who is trying to conquer the world using a cosmic cube artifact.
The gameplay is built on straightforward forward progress accompanied by battles against waves of enemies, and the player can upgrade their hero by collecting power-ups that temporarily boost attacks or change their range. Compared to many other licensed beat-'em-ups of the time, the game tries to preserve the superhero identity of each character through distinct moves and abilities, so choosing which character to play genuinely affects your approach to combat and forces the player to adapt their tactics to the chosen hero's specific abilities. The environments also shift, from the streets of New York to the Red Skull's secret bases, adding visual variety to the playthrough.
As a conversion of an arcade title to the more limited NES hardware, the game had to undergo a significant reduction in graphics and content, yet it managed to preserve the basic backbone of fast action and Marvel atmosphere. For fans of comic-book games from the turn of the eighties and nineties, it represents an interesting glimpse into the early era of licensed video game adaptations, when studios were still finding a balance between faithfulness to the source material and what the home console could handle.
Why play it: it offers fast comic-book action with a strong Marvel identity that the NES library doesn't have much of.
