Vegas Dream
Vegas Dream is an unusual excursion into the world of gambling within the NES library, released in 1990 by American Sammy. Instead of action or platforming, it casts the player as a visitor to Las Vegas who has to make their way from a modest budget to as large a fortune as possible through bets at the roulette wheel, slot machines, card games, and dice.
The game's structure resembles a light economic simulation more than a classic video game – the player gradually gets to know various casinos around the city, each offering different odds and atmosphere, and must weigh how much of their capital to wager on each game. Besides pure gambling, the game also includes minor side elements, such as buying better clothing or accommodation, which affect how the player is perceived within the game and what opportunities open up to them, with progress rewarding patient decision-making rather than risking everything on a single gamble. The visual presentation of the individual casino games remains clear and easy to read even on the small screens of period televisions.
With its focus on gambling games, Vegas Dream stood out from the usual NES catalog, dominated by action titles and platformers, offering an alternative for players looking for slower, calculation-oriented entertainment. As one of the few licensing-uncomplicated casino games on the console, it remains an interesting curiosity for collectors interested in the genre diversity of the NES library, not least because this type of game rarely appeared on Nintendo consoles.
Why play it: it offers an unusual casino simulation that has little competition on the NES.
