Arcade hockey by Konami with an iconic digitized voice; flash over simulation.

When that iconic digitised voice announcing the start of the match rang out, you knew a proper brawl on the ice awaited you. Blades of Steel from the Konami workshop became, in the eight-bit era, a synonym for arcade hockey that favours speed, spectacle and raw fun over detailed simulation. And that is exactly why players still remember it with a smile on their lips to this day.

Konami bet on its speciality of the time: a polished presentation and instantly graspable playability. The matches run briskly, the action is clear and the goals fall in spectacular situations. But the game does not stop at just handling the puck. As soon as sparks fly between players, the screen switches to a man-versus-man duel where you throw fists in a minigame that became the calling card of the whole game. This hockey fight was unexpectedly bold at the time of release and enchanted players.

Besides the hockey itself, Blades of Steel also offers a small gem in the form of a shooting minigame that Konami incorporated into the game as a bit of relief between matches. It is precisely this willingness to add something extra that makes the game feel generous and playful. You can feel in it the signature of a studio that in the eighties knew how to make arcade games better than almost anyone else.

On the gameplay side, it is a pure arcade. Do not look here for deep tactical layers or realistic rules; instead the game aims for the immediate joy of a fast goal, a hard clash and a victory fought out in the last second. In two-player play this becomes ideal fuel for a neighbourhood derby at a single screen.

Blades of Steel is a perfect demonstration of why Konami had a reputation in the eight-bit era as one of the best developers of arcade games. It is not a title that tries to be everything; it is a game that wants you to have fun from the first to the last second. And it succeeds to this day. Among NES hockey games, it is one of those you do not forget.

Why play: For fast arcade hockey with a legendary fist fight and that typical Konami flair that has not aged.
