SNK's 1991 title put players in the shoes of a giant kaiju smashing miniature Japanese cities.

When SNK unleashed King of the Monsters on the Neo Geo in 1991, it fulfilled the dream of everyone who grew up on Japanese films about rubber-suited monsters. Instead of a classic fighting game, it put you in the skin of a giant Godzilla-style kaiju and let you brawl with other monsters right in the middle of miniature Japanese cities — which literally crumbled beneath you.

At its core was a wrestling system: you grabbed opponents, threw them, pinned them to the ground, and tried to hold them down for three seconds like in a real match. There was a roster of iconic creatures to choose from — a fiery dinosaur, a giant octopus, a humanoid giant, and a robot — each with its own grapples and strikes. Wrecking the scenery wasn't just for show; stomped buildings, skyscrapers, and pylons were part of the fun.

Retro players prize King of the Monsters mainly for its bombastic two-player mode and its pure, dumb demolition fun. Compared to SNK's later fighters, it's a rougher, simpler piece, but it's precisely that raw, comic-book energy that keeps this early Neo Geo classic a rewarding pick for one wild evening for two.
