Classic Kirby on the hunt for a cake; new combinations of abilities with items.

Kirby: Squeak Squad is a classic Kirby platformer in which he sets off after a gang of thieving mice who stole his cake - and with it, valuable treasures scattered across the kingdom. The game sticks to the series' proven formula: inhaling enemies, copying abilities, and progressing through colorful levels full of hidden rooms and bonus corridors that reward thorough exploration. New are treasure chests and the ability to combine acquired abilities with items, creating upgraded versions of attacks - a fire sword, an ice hammer, or an electric umbrella - which adds a light layer of experimentation to otherwise straightforward gameplay and motivates players to return to previously visited levels.

Visually the game continues the series' traditional cute style, with bright colors and simple but distinctive graphics that the DS display handles without difficulty, and each world retains its own visual identity. The music is cheerful and melodic, typical of Kirby's world, and the bottom screen is used mainly for an inventory overview and map, or for small touch interactions while searching for treasure. The difficulty is set to be welcoming, making the game suitable even for younger or less experienced players, while more experienced ones can search for hidden items and bonus levels for full completion and to unlock additional content.

Contemporary reviews rated the game as pleasant but not particularly innovative - many critics pointed out that the series was starting to feel formulaic at the time and that the new features were mostly cosmetic. Still, the title found its audience thanks to its relaxed atmosphere and the reliable fun players expect from Kirby. Today it is seen as a solid, undemanding piece for moments of relaxation, more of a collection addition than a major series milestone, ideal for a few pleasant evenings.
