An elegant sliding puzzle about adding up tiles; the original later overshadowed by 2048.

Threes! slides numbered tiles across a grid with a single finger swipe in one of four directions and merges them according to precise rules – a one only adds up with a two, other matching values add up with each other, and the resulting tile doubles. The seemingly simple principle hides a deep strategic game about planning several moves ahead and about where on a full board another tile can still fit before the player runs out of space and the game ends.

The game was created by studio Sirvo after months of fine-tuning the colors, sounds, and behavior of the little characters on the tiles so that every move would feel satisfying even without a single point of score added – the tiles comment on each other's moves like living characters, not numbers. It's precisely this precision of presentation and balance of rules that made it a benchmark that reviews of similar games still refer to today – it wasn't just about the mechanics, but about a complete, thought-out feeling to every single move, from the sound of a tile landing to the subtle animation of its shift.

Shortly after release, dozens of clones appeared, the most famous of which, the freely available 2048, nearly overshadowed the game and cost Sirvo a large part of the success it deserved, even though it was Threes! that stood at the origin of the whole principle and did the actual work of fine-tuning the rules. Threes! is a paid title without ads, and anyone who wants to experience the original in its polished form, not just a simplified copy, will find in it a subtler and more thoughtful game than the one that later made 2048 famous.

Why play: Suits players who already know 2048 and want to experience the more refined original from which that simplified number game emerged.
