Jetpack Joyride
Jetpack Joyride puts the player in a jetpack in the middle of a laboratory the main hero is trying to escape from, while racing along an endless track full of lasers, electric fields, and rockets that need to be dodged with a single button — holding it makes the character rise higher, releasing it lets them sink back toward the ground. That simplicity of controls left room for precise timing, since every obstacle requires a slightly different rhythm of rising and falling, and a single mistake means the run ends instantly.
After the success of Fruit Ninja, Halfbrick looked for another concept built around a single gesture, this time with more long-term progression — coins collected during a run get invested in dozens of vehicles, costumes, and upgrades that change the character's look and properties without fundamentally breaking the game's basic rule. Humor in the form of absurd suits, a unicorn to ride, and a hand-built machine gave the game a personality that the endless runner genre often lacked at the time.
The combination of short runs, visible progress in gear, and regular rewards for daily logins made Jetpack Joyride one of the longest-lived mobile titles of its generation — the game received updates with new content for years after release and is still played today for free, supported by ads and optional real-money coin purchases.
Why play it: A great choice for short daily sessions with visible progress in gear, though the free-to-play elements and ads need to be counted as a fixed part of the experience.
