An atmospheric piano rhythm game; a story told without words in one of the most beautiful mobile games.

Deemo is a rhythm game in which the player taps falling notes over piano and orchestral pieces, while a story quietly unfolds without words about a girl who falls into a mysterious house inhabited by a silent being named Deemo, together with whom she grows a tree that responds to how well the player performs the songs. Rayark built the controls purely around touch – notes fall along different paths toward the edge of the screen and the player must hit them at the exact moment – and paired it with melancholic piano and ambient music from a range of composers, thanks to which Deemo ranks among the visually and sonically most striking rhythm games on mobile ever, still cited today as a model for the genre. The gradually growing tree and changing rooms serve as a quiet indicator of the story, without the game needing a single written word or dialogue box.

The base version of the game is free with a limited selection of songs, while additional songs and whole packs are bought as microtransactions, which is a common and fairly unobtrusive model for rhythm games on mobile, since the game can be completed even with the free offering. Over the years the game also got a port to PC and consoles and a new chapter, Deemo II, confirming just how well the original concept was designed already on mobile touch controls, and how strongly it resonated with players around the world. Its quiet, melancholic atmosphere and the absence of any violence or time pressure make it one of those games players return to for the feeling rather than the challenge.

Why play it: For players looking for a rhythm game with an emotional, wordlessly told story and a piano atmosphere, not just a collection of songs to tap along to.
