A base-building strategy game that set the rules for free-to-play mobile gaming.

Clash of Clans, from the Finnish studio Supercell, released in 2012 and within a few years became synonymous with the entire genre of mobile base-building strategy games. The principle seems simple: the player builds a village, constructs defensive towers and walls, trains troops, and attacks other players' villages while defending their own. The magic lies in how well this cycle fits short gaming sessions on a phone – construction and training run on timers, so the player returns to the game at regular intervals instead of long sittings.

It was precisely on this principle that Supercell built the monetization that later became a template for the entire segment: the game is free to download, but the key resource is time, or rather speeding it up with gems bought with real money. It's not aggressive gacha with a random draw – more a matter of patient waiting that can be shortened by paying. The combination of clan cooperation, leaderboards, and regular in-game events also gave the game a social dimension that kept players active for years after release.

Clash of Clans influenced dozens of followers and remains to this day one of the longest-running mobile titles ever, with regular content updates. For many players it was also the first game on which they adopted the phone as a fully-fledged gaming platform, and the game's name has since become synonymous with the entire genre for the general public outside gaming circles.

Why play it: Ideal for players interested in slower, long-term strategy and clan cooperation who accept that faster progress is tied to spending on gems.
