Rise of the Dragon
Rise of the Dragon is a cyberpunk detective adventure set in a devastated Los Angeles of 2053, where former police officer William Blade investigates the death of a young woman linked to a new addictive drug. The investigation is conducted through a combination of moving around the city, searching crime scenes, and conversations in which you choose from a menu of lines. Time plays a crucial role — the clock keeps running, meetings happen at specific moments, and a lead you miss may be gone forever. This makes the game an unusually tense adventure where planning your day becomes a layer of gameplay in its own right, and it also means the first playthrough tends to be an exercise in learning the terrain.
Even in its original form the game relied on digitized characters and cinematic scene composition, and the Mega-CD version pushes this further with spoken dialogue and disc-based music. The screens have a dark, neon-lit palette, the character animation during conversations is unusually detailed, and the overall impression is deliberately grimy — the city feels tired, dusty, and hopeless. The soundscape, with its pulsing synthetic motifs, sustains this mood and can turn up the intensity in tenser passages. The production also includes harsher scenes and themes that were not common on consoles in the year of release.
At the time, the game belonged to a group of computer adventures with which Sega wanted to show that the add-on wasn't just a video player. Critics praised the atmosphere and the flowing-time concept, while reservations centered on the need for repetition and the fact that some dead ends only reveal themselves hours later. Its influence can be seen in later detective games that use limited time as a dramatic device. Today it's a strong atmospheric experience that benefits from the player accepting that a few attempts are part of the design. Anyone who enjoys slow cyberpunk storytelling and doesn't mind dated cursor controls will find one of the best-constructed adventures in the whole library here.
