Pocket-sized Bomberman; cross-shaped blasts, collectible bonuses, and a maze full of destructible blocks.

Bomberman GB is the portable version of Hudson Soft's well-known series, released for the Game Boy in 1994, bringing the classic Bomberman gameplay to the console adapted for its small display. The player controls the titular character moving through a square maze full of destructible and indestructible blocks, plants bombs that explode in a cross pattern after a short delay, and uses the explosions to eliminate enemies and obstacles while collecting upgrades that increase blast range, the number of bombs that can be placed at once, or movement speed. The game features a series of progressing levels in which the number and cunning of the enemies grows, offering an increasingly demanding challenge of both logic and reflexes. The key skill is predicting where and when a bomb will go off and planning a safe escape route to the next objective in time, since one's own explosion can injure the player just as easily as an enemy.

On the Game Boy the game is rendered with clear, high-contrast graphics that clearly distinguish destructible blocks, obstacles, and enemies even on the small monochrome display, which matters when deciding quickly where to place a bomb. The controls are simple - move and place a bomb - but the depth comes from planning an escape route before the actual explosion. The music is brisk and energetic, typical of the Bomberman series, and complements the pace of each level well.

Bomberman GB confirmed that the concept of a destructible maze and tactical bomb placement works just as well on a handheld console with limited technical capabilities. In its time it was among the popular titles for players looking for a mix of action and logical planning. Today it remains a playable reminder of the Bomberman series' early period and a demonstration of how well its simple yet deep mechanics adapted to the handheld format. Thanks to portable entries like this, the Bomberman series stayed in players' minds even outside home consoles, helping it survive across several generations of hardware.
