Tony Hawk's Pro Skater (GBC)
Few people in 2000 believed the famous skateboarding phenomenon could be crammed into an 8-bit handheld console — and yet Tony Hawk's Pro Skater on the Game Boy Color pulled off that near-impossible trick. While the big versions on the PlayStation set the tone for an entire generation, this miniature adaptation from studio Vicarious Visions took the heart of the game and translated it into an isometric 2D view that works surprisingly well on the small screen.
Here the player rides as real pros, led by Tony Hawk, completing objectives like collecting the letters S-K-A-T-E, reaching a score limit, or finding a hidden VHS tape, and above all chaining tricks into the longest possible combos. It's precisely the system of linking tricks, grinds, and manuals — which lets you sustain one huge combo across the entire map — that made the series famous, and Vicarious Visions got it onto the GBC in a surprisingly believable form. The controls are responsive, the pace brisk, and the urge for "just one more try for a better score" is just as addictive as on the big consoles.
For retro gamers, this port is small proof that limited hardware doesn't have to mean a stripped-down experience. It's one of those games that suit short sessions during a trip perfectly, yet you can easily spend hours polishing your personal records.
