Bugs Bunny: Crazy Castle 4
Bugs Bunny: Crazy Castle 4 continues the long tradition of the Crazy Castle series, which since the days of the NES has combined platforming mazes with item collecting and evading enemies from the Looney Tunes universe, such as Elmer Fudd or Yosemite Sam. On the Game Boy Color, the player, as Bugs Bunny or other beloved characters, moves through the winding floors of a castle, collects carrots and other items, and must outsmart patrolling enemies using traps, secret doors, and cleverly placed obstacles, rather than direct confrontation, which is barely an option here, since unlike other heroes, Bugs Bunny doesn't fight.
The game thus sits at the border of platformer and puzzle game — each level functions as a small puzzle that must be solved through the right sequence of steps and use of game mechanisms such as trapdoors, teleporters, or timed switches. Developer and publisher Kemco, which had extensive experience with the Crazy Castle series from previous installments, managed even on GBC hardware to deliver a clear, color-coded environment and characters faithful to the classic Looney Tunes aesthetic that players knew well from television cartoons and previous series entries dating all the way back to the eighties.
The fourth Crazy Castle installment never caused a sensation, but among fans of puzzle-platformers and the Looney Tunes license it is regarded as a reliable continuation of an established concept that changes nothing fundamental but doesn't spoil anything either, offering dozens of levels to think through. Today the game is appreciated mainly by players who enjoy a calmer pace and the puzzle-driven structure of games similar to the classic Adventures of Lolo, enriched with humor and characters that have accompanied many generations of children and adults around the world, whether from television cartoons or previous video game entries.
