Wolverine, Cyclops and co. against the tyrant Apocalypse in a solidly crafted action platformer.

X-Men: Reign of Apocalypse is an action platformer from Konami that brought the beloved mutants of the X-Men universe to the Game Boy Advance in a story where the tyrannical Apocalypse tries to impose his vision of a world ruled by mutants, and a team of heroes led by Wolverine and Cyclops, joined by other fan-favorite characters from the comics such as Storm and Rogue, rises up against his army.

The player controls several members of the X-Men team in turn, each with their own set of abilities and attacks matching their comic book identity, and moves through linear levels full of enemies and platforming obstacles set across themed environments. During play, the player can switch between the available characters, allowing them to respond to a particular type of enemy or environment by choosing the most suitable mutant and their unique ability. The combat is straightforward, but thanks to the variety of characters and their special powers, the game offers an enjoyable variety of approaches to each situation and encourages replaying with a different favorite character from the comics. The visuals are typically meticulous for Konami, with finely detailed characters and backgrounds, and the music underscores the action-packed, comic-book atmosphere of the whole game.

At release, the game was received as one of the better licensed action titles on the GBA, praised for the honest execution of its combat system and its respect for the source material, unlike many other comic book adaptations of the time, which often felt like hastily assembled products with no real interest in the source material. Today, Reign of Apocalypse is an interesting item for X-Men fans and collectors who appreciate that a licensed handheld game managed to offer more than just the name of a popular brand, thanks to solid craftsmanship and respect for the comic book characters.

Why play it: For X-Men fans and collectors of licensed titles, it offers solid combat craftsmanship and a respect for the source material that many other comic book adaptations of the era lacked.
