Solo Flight
Solo Flight is a civilian flight simulator from MicroProse, one of the studio's earliest titles, released for the Atari 8-bit in the mid-1980s. The player takes the controls of a light sport aircraft working for a mail delivery company, ferrying cargo and mail between smaller airfields across the United States, and must master takeoff, instrument and radio-beacon navigation, landing, and the basics of dealing with air traffic control. The game gradually ramps up weather difficulty and night flights, turning simple hops into an increasingly demanding test of piloting skill. Players also have to keep an eye on the business side of things, since earnings from delivered cargo determine how quickly they can afford a better aircraft.
The graphics on the eight-bit Atari are spare but functional — the cockpit with its instrument panel, the horizon, and the runway are all rendered with simple vector graphics that allowed for smooth motion on machines of the era. The simulation emphasized working the instruments, managing fuel, and following prescribed procedures, a fairly untypical approach at a time when most games offered action, focused instead on patience and precision. The sound is limited to engine drone and warning tones, forcing the player to concentrate mainly on reading the instruments, much like a real pilot in poor visibility.
Solo Flight helped establish MicroProse as a maker of serious simulators even before more famous titles like Silent Service or F-15 Strike Eagle arrived, and for Atari 8-bit owners it represented one of the few genuinely systematic flight simulators available on the platform. Today it's interesting chiefly as a historical record of the genre's early days, when developers were still finding the balance between realism and playability on limited hardware, and as a reminder of how modest means could conjure the feeling of a long-distance flight over the American landscape.
Why play it: For anyone interested in the history of flight simulators who wants to experience an early take on long-distance flight over the American landscape, built with modest means.
