Aliens Neoplasma

Shmup 2018 nezávislý český vývojář Aliens ⏱ Short · up to ~3 h 🆓 Homebrew

A modern 2018 homebrew shooter; fast action with well-paced difficulty progression.

Aliens Neoplasma is a modern horizontally scrolling shooter created for the Atari 800 in 2018 by an independent Czech developer, and it has become one of the most notable new additions to the computer's library over the past decade. The player pilots a spaceship and fights through waves of alien enemies and end-of-level bosses, with the game relying on fast action, clearly readable enemy patterns, and a gradual ramp-up in pace toward significantly harder final stages. The level structure is straightforward but well-paced, so the player gradually moves from simple formations to more elaborate bosses that require memorizing attack patterns.

Technically, it's a showcase of what the Atari 8-bit is still capable of even forty years after its release — the game offers smooth background scrolling, plenty of moving objects on screen at once, and colorful, detailed graphics that hold their own against the best the platform produced during its commercial era. The music and sound effects complete the arcade-shooter atmosphere, and the game was also released in physical, boxed cartridge form, a practice common in modern Atari homebrew development thanks to the availability of tools for both development and manufacturing custom cartridges.

Aliens Neoplasma is a typical example of how the Czech and Central European Atari 8-bit scene lives on today — enthusiasts don't just keep old games alive, they also create entirely new titles that build on decades of accumulated knowledge of the hardware and its possibilities. For players who enjoy straightforward arcade shooters, it's one of the best reasons to pick up a real Atari today, whether on original hardware or in an emulator, and see for themselves that the 8-bit era was far from over in the nineties. The game also proves there's a living continuity between the platform's older fans and a younger generation of developers, thanks to which a machine from the late seventies still receives brand-new, full-fledged titles.

Why play it: For fans of straightforward arcade shooters, it's one of the best reasons to pick up a real Atari even today and see for yourself that the 8-bit era was far from over in the nineties.
