Time Pilot
Time Pilot from 1982 is one of Konami's most inventive concepts from the early 1980s. The player sits at the controls of an aircraft capable of moving through time, and each mission takes place in a different historical era – from 1910-era biplanes through World War II fighters to futuristic machines of the far future. The very idea of building an entire game around time travel was unusual for its time and remains one of the most memorable things Konami came up with during this era.
The game takes place on a freely scrolling screen across which the aircraft moves in all directions while the background scrolls according to the direction of flight – an unconventional approach at the time that gave the shooter a far greater sense of space than traditional vertical or horizontal scrolling. Each level ends with a battle against a mothership and the rescue of parachuting pilots escaping their downed aircraft, adding a small tactical element on top of pure dodging and shooting. The visual differentiation of each time period – color palette, enemy shapes, and their behavior – still feels inventive today and clearly signals to the player which era they have just entered.
The game's success led Konami to the sequel Time Pilot 84 and further spin-offs, but it is the first installment that is prized for the purity of its idea and the precision of its execution. In the history of arcade shooters, Time Pilot holds a firm place as proof of how powerful a simple yet original gameplay hook can be, and it still appears on compilations of Konami classics.
Why play it: Traveling through time across historical battles gives an otherwise ordinary multidirectional shooter an unmistakable identity and a timeless idea.
