The iconic BOOMSHAKALAKA and over-the-top dunks; 2-on-2 arcade basketball with no brakes.

BOOMSHAKALAKA. One word that defined an entire genre and burned itself into the memory of a generation of players. NBA Jam wasn't a basketball simulation, it was a celebration of the impossible, a game where two players a side leapt several meters into the air, set the ball on fire and made the whole cabinet dance with their pure, over-the-top energy.

The gameplay was gloriously simple: two on two, no fouls apart from exceptions, no basketball offside, just speed, dunks and points. When a player sank three baskets in a row, the ball literally caught fire and the character entered the on fire state, when almost every shot went in and the dunks got even more absurd. This mechanic made NBA Jam the perfect party experience, one that was mainly about joy and laughter, not tactics. Dunks from half court, characters flying through the air like superheroes and instant feedback turned every play into a little explosion.

NBA Jam was developed by Midway, and the game used digitized likenesses of real NBA players, which lent it authenticity despite its utterly unrealistic gameplay. The cabinet became a huge financial success and was among the highest-grossing arcade games of its time, earning arcade operators considerable sums. Its popularity led to a string of ports to home consoles and to a whole series of sequels that kept this style of basketball alive for many years.

Culturally, NBA Jam had an enormous reach. It helped popularize basketball among gamers and became a textbook example of how an arcade sport can be more fun than a realistic simulation. The announcer's catchphrases, including the legendary boomshakalaka and he is on fire, entered pop culture and fans still quote them today. The game also featured a host of hidden characters and funny secrets that players passed on by word of mouth, further cementing its status as a phenomenon.

Arcade cabinets were at their peak at the time, and sports titles were an important part of them because they drew multiple players to competitive play at a single machine. NBA Jam perfectly exploited this social dimension of the arcades, where little crowds gathered around the cabinet, took turns dueling for points, and where every spectacular dunk drew a loud reaction from the onlookers.

It's exactly this combination of instant fun, exaggerated style and social experience that made NBA Jam one of the most beloved arcade games of all time. The game showed that a sports title doesn't have to be a serious simulation to captivate, and that exaggeration can be far more entertaining than faithfully copying reality.

NBA Jam's legacy is still vividly felt in every arcade sports game that bets on spectacle and fun over accuracy. Its style, its catchphrases and its two-on-two spirit became the yardstick for what a sports game should look like, one you play mainly to have fun and laugh, whether you win or lose.

Why play: For the pure, over-the-top joy of dunks from half court and the boomshakalaka catchphrase that turns every match into a party.
