Darkstalkers: The Night Warriors
Darkstalkers: The Night Warriors from 1994 transplanted Street Fighter's proven combat system into a world of horror monsters – vampires, werewolves, mummies, zombies, and other classic movie creatures competing against each other in stylized, gothic arenas full of graveyards, mansions, and moonlit landscapes. The game kept Capcom's six-button control scheme and special-move system but added faster, more airborne fights with an emphasis on combo chaining, flying around the screen, and more aggressive, offense-oriented play than the Street Fighter II of the time.
On CPS-2 hardware, the game looked visually very striking, with finely animated, cartoonishly exaggerated characters full of horror-tinged black humor and dark, atmospheric music underscoring the nocturnal, spooky theme of the individual arenas. The humorous, exaggerated tone of the animations and combat gestures contrasted with the dark monster setting and gave the game a distinctive visual style that set it apart both from the more realistically styled fighting games of the competition and from the more colorful Street Fighter.
Darkstalkers was received at the time as a refreshing, boldly styled alternative to mainstream fighting games and won a loyal fanbase, especially outside Japan in North America, where its horror aesthetic resonated well with local pop culture. Its fast, airborne combat system influenced later Capcom titles, including the famous Marvel vs. Capcom crossover series, to which it contributed its own characters. Today, Darkstalkers is valued above all for its unmistakable visual style and fast, technical fights that set it apart from most fighting games of the nineties. Characters like the vampire Demitri Maximoff or the mummy Anakaris became cult favorites thanks in part to later sequels, and the game remains to this day a popular choice among fans of horror aesthetics combined with traditional Japanese fighting games.
Why play it: Because of its unmistakable horror visual style and fast, technical fights, Darkstalkers is worth the attention of anyone who enjoys fighting games with their own distinctive atmosphere.
