Robot miner Rusty digs through ever-deeper layers of earth and reinvests his profits into gear.

SteamWorld Dig puts the player in the role of Rusty, a robotic miner who arrives in the run-down western town of Tumbleton to take over his late uncle's mine, and quickly discovers that much more than ore is hidden beneath the surface. The core of the gameplay is digging steadily deeper through procedurally adjusted layers of earth, collecting gems and metals, selling them on the surface, and then investing the proceeds into upgrades for the pickaxe, backpack capacity, lantern, and other gear, creating an addictive loop of mining, returning to the surface, and gradually growing richer.

As the game progresses, new abilities are added, such as explosives, an improved jump, a drill attachment, or a teleportation device, which open up previously inaccessible areas of the mine and give the game a clear metroidvania character with returns to older parts of the map. The atmosphere is rounded out by the distinctive steampunk design of the robotic inhabitants and the western styling of the surface town, complemented by atmospheric, calm music that contrasts with the tension of the lantern's dwindling light deep underground.

Critics received the game on the 3DS very warmly, praising above all its addictive gameplay loop, the elegant tying of mining to story progression, and a pleasant difficulty curve. SteamWorld Dig remains a commonly recommended title on the eShop and across the whole handheld generation, its seemingly simple but masterfully tuned concept holding up even with considerable hindsight, and it later gave rise to further entries in the SteamWorld series. The combination of short, satisfying gameplay loops with the player character's steadily growing power makes it a title that's easy to play in small chunks yet capable of absorbing entire afternoon sessions, which works exceptionally well on a handheld's limited screen and explains why players were happy to return to it even after finishing the main story.
