Star Fox 64 3D
Some classics age like fine wine, and Star Fox 64 is one of them. Star Fox 64 3D from 2011 is a meticulous remake of the legendary Nintendo 64 rail shooter, bringing the flight squadron of the cosmic fox Fox McCloud to a handheld console in full polygonal splendor and with stereoscopic 3D that suits this genre like few others.
The foundation remained faithful to the original. You pilot the Arwing combat craft across dozens of missions throughout the galaxy, shooting down enemies, maneuvering between obstacles, and facing inventive bosses, while your teammates Falco, Peppy, and Slippy constantly report something over the radio. Famous lines like the celebrated „Do a barrel roll“ have gone down in gaming history and return here too.
Visually the game underwent a complete overhaul. The rough polygons of the original version were replaced by clean, detailed models, and the world feels far more alive. Stereoscopic 3D lends the battles a depth and sense of space that was missing before on a large screen. The nonlinear structure was also preserved, where the path through the galaxy branches according to your progress and performance, inviting repeated playthroughs.
The remake also added alternative motion-sensor controls, where you tilt the entire console, and a new multiplayer battle mode using the front cameras to show opponents' faces. An easier difficulty was prepared for newcomers, while veterans could play in a setting closer to the original.
Star Fox 64 3D served as a great example of how remakes of classics should look: respect for the source combined with sensitive modernization. For players who missed the original, it's the ideal entry point into one of Nintendo's most charismatic cosmic series.
Why play it: It's a perfectly modernized version of a classic rail shooter with stereoscopic 3D and the indestructible charm of the original. For nostalgics and newcomers alike craving brisk space action.
