Tomb Raider
In the autumn of 1996 a game arrived that showed what could really be done with three-dimensional space. Tomb Raider, by the British studio Core Design, sent archaeologist Lara Croft into vast, silent tombs where the point was less shooting than reading a room: judging the length of a jump, hunting for a lever, bracing for whatever waited around the corner. A camera behind the shoulder, a precise grid of blocks and complete solitude created an atmosphere nobody else was offering at the time, and within months Lara had become one of the best-known characters of her era.
The series then shipped almost yearly. The second and third games leaned harder into action, Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation returned to Egypt, and Chronicles also appeared on Dreamcast. Fatigue showed with The Angel of Darkness, after which Crystal Dynamics took the brand over. Tomb Raider: Legend and Anniversary restored confidence to the controls, and Underworld rounded that arc off. The real restart came in 2013: the new Tomb Raider introduced a younger, more vulnerable Lara and moved closer to cinematic action, with a proper combat system and stealth. Rise of the Tomb Raider and 2018's Shadow of the Tomb Raider completed the trilogy and brought back more of the actual tombs and puzzles fans had been asking for.
