Dead Space
Dead Space launched in 2008 as a survival horror series from Visceral Games (then EA Redwood Shores), built from the start around the claustrophobic atmosphere of the mining ship USG Ishimura, overrun by mutated creatures called Necromorphs. Engineer Isaac Clarke is the player's avatar, and the series is defined by "strategic dismemberment" — cutting off limbs rather than aiming for the head — the iconic improvised Plasma Cutter, and zero-gravity movement using magnetic boots. The plot revolves around a mysterious artifact called the Marker and a religious cult known as Unitology, whose influence runs through the whole series and adds a conspiracy layer to the pure horror.
The sequel, Dead Space 2 (2011), moved the action to the Sprawl station orbiting Titan, gave Isaac a voice for the first time, and developed his psychological trauma from earlier events, including hallucinations tied to the Marker and the loss of his girlfriend Nicole. The game added more action and more elaborate zero-gravity movement without abandoning the horror foundation, and it's widely regarded by fans and critics alike as the series' high point. Dead Space 3 (2013) pushed further into action and two-player co-op, introduced weapon crafting from scavenged parts, microtransactions, and a more open setting on the icy planet Tau Volantis, where the Markers' origin is revealed — a shift some fans read as a retreat from the intimate horror of the first game.
Alongside the main trilogy came spin-offs such as the on-rails shooter Dead Space: Extraction for Wii, telling a prequel story, the episodic Dead Space Ignition, an iOS mobile version, and the animated films Dead Space: Downfall and Dead Space: Aftermath, which extended the universe beyond the main games. After Dead Space 3 failed to meet sales expectations, the series went quiet for years, and the final blow came when Visceral Games was shut down in 2017 along with its in-progress project, leaving the franchise's future uncertain for a long stretch.
The comeback arrived in 2023 with a remake of the original game by Motive Studio, which overhauled controls, visuals, and sound, filled in some side plotlines, added the option to play as a female version of Isaac, and still preserved the Ishimura's atmosphere in full — received as proof that the series' horror concept still holds up more than a decade later.
