A woman's life told without words, through unpacking boxes after every move.

Unpacking is an unassuming puzzle game in which the player receives no text or dialogue at all, and yet an entire woman's life story unfolds before them. The task is always to unpack boxes after a move and find a fitting place for every item – from a stuffed toy and a diploma to kitchenware – and with each new chapter to watch the character grow up, move out of her parents' house, live with roommates, go through a relationship, and finally settle into her own apartment. The mechanic is seemingly simple: move objects with the mouse or controller into cabinets, onto shelves and tables, but the game carefully tracks logic – a cookbook doesn't belong in the bathroom, and a diploma isn't meant to be hidden under the bed. It's in these small details that the wordless storytelling hides, and the player gradually pieces together for themselves what happened to the heroine in between. The game comes from the Australian studio Witch Beam, previously known for the completely different arcade shooter Assault Android Cactus, and the move to a quiet, introspective genre marked a significant change of direction for the studio.

On Xbox Series X|S the game runs smoothly in high resolution, and its hand-drawn pixel-art style feels clean and cozy, matched by quiet ambient music underscoring the domestic atmosphere. It launched as one of the titles available on Xbox Game Pass right on release day, which helped it reach a broad audience that might otherwise have passed over such an unusual genre. Both critics and players received the game as an original, sensitively crafted experience, praised especially for the inventiveness with which it tells a personal story purely through the arrangement of objects in space, and it also appeared in nominations for awards devoted to independent and narrative titles.

Even years later, Unpacking demonstrates that a narrative game doesn't need a single spoken or written sentence to strike an emotional chord. Its short playtime and soothing pace make it an ideal title for relaxation, and it remains a frequently cited example of inventive indie design that players like to return to just for its soothing atmosphere and the honest craftsmanship of its details.

Why play: Anyone looking for a short, soothing game that tells a story without a single spoken line will find in Unpacking an inventive indie title worth returning to just for its soothing atmosphere.
