Batman is dead; the four members of the Batman Family defend Gotham in a co-op RPG.

Gotham Knights takes place in Gotham after Batman's death and puts the player in the role of one of four members of the Batman Family – Nightwing, Red Hood, Batgirl, or Robin – who must learn to protect the city without their mentor, his years of experience, or his strict oversight. WB Games Montréal built on the legacy of the Arkham series but shifted the concept toward an action RPG with two-player co-op, a leveling system, gear, crafting, and specialized skills for each playable character, each with a distinct combat style and personality.

Compared to the Arkham games, the combat system relies more heavily on RPG elements – enemies have levels and resistances that must be overcome with better gear, upgrades, and a more tactical approach to combat, which changes the pacing compared to the fluid combo system of the earlier Rocksteady games. The open Gotham is divided into several districts, and the player travels around it on the Batcycle motorcycle or swings across rooftops with a grappling hook, while the main story follows a clash with the Court of Owls, a secret order of wealthy families that has controlled the city from the shadows for generations.

On Xbox Series X|S the game offers both a performance and a quality mode, though technical issues with performance and lower frame rates plagued it especially in the first weeks after launch, before developers partially fixed them with subsequent patches and updates. Reviews were mixed – praising the story and character design but criticizing the repetitive mission structure and persistent technical shortcomings in the open world. Even so, the game found a loyal fanbase, particularly thanks to two-player co-op and extensive ongoing post-launch content support. The game also features a day-night cycle with changing weather that affects gang behavior and visibility on Gotham's rooftops. Despite its rocky start, the game gradually found its firm place in the Xbox Series X|S library.

Why play it: Anyone who appreciates the story, character design, and two-player co-op will overlook the repetitive mission structure and the technical hiccups that plagued Gotham's open world in the first weeks after launch.
