Subnautica
Subnautica is a survival game from Unknown Worlds in which, after a spaceship crash, the player finds themselves alone in the ocean of an alien planet. They have no weapon, no map, and the only thing they have is an escape pod and a scanner. From there the whole experience unfolds: gathering resources, building a base on the seabed, crafting better gear, and above all gradually descending into depths where it's dark, the pressure is immense, and the creatures are considerably bigger than you.
The game deliberately avoids classic enemies to defeat — most of the tension comes from the environment itself. Oxygen is counted in seconds, the Seamoth submersible has a limited depth range, and going deeper first requires finding the materials to upgrade it, which means exploring an area the player hasn't seen yet. The fear of the depths is done honestly here: it's not about jump scares, but about sound, visibility of only a few meters, and the awareness that the way back is long. The story is revealed through found logs, explaining why the ship crashed and what happened on the planet before that.
Visually the game is built on colorful coral reefs in the shallows that gradually give way to increasingly inhospitable biomes. On Xbox One it arrived some time after a lengthy PC early access period and was well received precisely for how it manages to tie survival mechanics to exploration. The sequel, Below Zero, later carried the same principle into polar waters. Subnautica is often recommended even to people who don't normally play survival games — and, conversely, not recommended to those who have a problem with deep water.
Why play: For players who want to explore a colorful underwater world by combining survival with exploration — but definitely not for those who have a problem with deep water.
