Project Gotham Racing 4
Project Gotham Racing 4 is the final entry in a series that spent its whole run trying to find its own place between arcade and simulation, and it managed that better than anyone else. At its core is the Kudos system, points for style. It's not enough to cross the finish line first; the game rewards long controlled drifts, driving the inside line, close passes on opponents, and clean laps without a scratch. Whoever just drives fast gets little. Whoever drives fast and elegantly unlocks new cars and tracks. This principle turns every lap into a small improvisation, because taking risks pays off, but a single hit against the barriers wipes out your whole chain of points.
The fourth installment added two crucial new features. The first is weather, which is not just decoration: rain, snow, and fog fundamentally change grip and visibility, so the same track in London or Tokyo is a completely different experience in a downpour. The second is motorcycles, which mix in with cars in races and handle very differently, with more sensitive braking and a completely different sense of speed. The career is put together from short challenges, which suits the game well because it can be played in half-hour sessions. There's also a sophisticated photo mode and a solid online component.
On Xbox 360 the game looked excellent, especially thanks to reflections on wet asphalt and honestly lit cities, which remain the main star. The engine sound is convincing, and the music draws on a selection across genres that you can switch between like a radio. Contemporary reviews were very favorable; the game was rated one of the best racing rides on the console, and the only thing critics held against it was its excessive similarity to its predecessor. The influence of the Kudos system is still visible today wherever racing games reward style rather than just time. Today PGR4 feels like a reminder that the series ended at its peak and never got a sequel. The gap it left behind was never fully filled, because racing games built on elegance of driving rather than perfection of simulation remain rare even years later.
