Jacksmith

Simulátor 2012 Flipline Studios ⏱ Medium · ~3–10 h

Forge weapons and then fight with them; a mix of crafting and tower defense from the creators of Papa's.

Jacksmith casts the player as a blacksmith who first hand-forges a sword, axe, or hammer by precisely timing hammer strikes and grinding the blade, then arms soldiers with that very weapon to fight off incoming waves of enemies. This combination of a crafting minigame and a tower-defense-like defensive strategy was fairly fresh in 2012, when the game was released by studio Flipline Studios – most similar titles focused on only one of these two layers, not both at once. The controls are purely mouse-based: forging happens by clicking and dragging at the right moment, while the player then watches the battles themselves and manages the deployment of units and the use of crafted weapons.

Flipline Studios is known primarily for the Papa's series, in which players run restaurants based on a similar principle of precisely timed actions, and Jacksmith carried that proven style over into a fantasy setting with forging and battles instead of cooking food. The gradual unlocking of new weapon types, materials, and enemies gave the game a natural difficulty curve and motivation to keep playing, while the colorful, cartoonish visuals stayed true to the style fans of the studio were used to from its other titles.

Jacksmith is today a somewhat overlooked entry in the Flipline Studios catalog, even though it offers one of the more original ideas of its time – combining a crafting minigame with tactical defense, something practically absent from other Flash games of the period. Progress across chapters unlocked new materials and enemies, so the approach to forging had to be continuously adapted.

Why play it: For players who want an unusual combination of crafting minigame and tower defense from the creators of the beloved Papa's series.
