Scramble
Scramble was one of the most influential arcade games of the late seventies and early eighties, and the Vectrex counted it among its finest conversions. The player pilots a small fighter craft that constantly scrolls from left to right over a nastily uneven landscape, and must fight through six distinct sections to reach the enemy base. It fires forward while also dropping bombs downward, so two tasks are handled at once the whole time: shooting down missiles launched from the ground and incoming enemies, while also destroying fuel tanks. Fuel drains on its own, and the only way to refill it is to hit a tank below you. This creates a constant dilemma – play it safe and maneuver up high, or risk dropping into a narrow corridor for another tank.
The Vectrex version rewrites the original raster arcade game into pure lines and, surprisingly, loses nothing in the process. Cave ceilings, hills, and narrow tunnels are drawn as sharp angular lines, missiles launch as thin streaks of light, and explosions scatter into fleeting patterns. Thanks to the vector monitor, the picture is perfectly smooth, and in tight passages it's easy to judge exactly where the ship still fits. The sound is more sparse than in arcades, yet it has its own nervous rhythm: a constant engine drone, terse beeps of gunfire, and a loud crack on impact with rock.
The game was praised at the time as one of the titles that justified buying the whole console, since it offered an arcade experience with few compromises. Its structure – six sections of distinct character flowing into one another without a break – became a template for the entire horizontal shooter genre, and its influence can be traced through dozens of later games. Today Scramble works as a beautifully compact arcade game: a single run lasts a few minutes, but memorizing the entire route takes considerably longer. The game also has no dead spots where you can relax, so even a short session feels intense. Anyone wanting to show why a vector console made sense in 1982 usually reaches for this one.
